Three reasons why we still love a cover letter

Love them or loathe them; the cover letter has a knack for dividing a room. At Kin, we’re firmly on the side of loving this impactful part of the application process. Here’s why.

Who are you really?

A resume or portfolio is a good way to share your background, skills, and experience but it’s quite two dimensional. We love to see that third dimension in all its glory; who are you really? What lights you up outside of the world of work? What are your values and how do they show up in your life? What crazy, interesting, thoughtful interests do you have? When we read a resume that’s accompanied by a cover letter, we feel a greater sense of your humanness and what makes you, you.

What’s your motivation for applying

A cover letter linking your passion or your why to the role you’re applying for is a sure-fire way to make a greater impact. In a market where application numbers are high (although we’d argue in any market); we want to know what interests you about the role, the company, and the mission of the organisation. Help us picture you in the role and all the good things you’d bring to it if you joined the organisation.

Context is everything

It would be rare for us to move a stand-alone resume straight to shortlist. Creating a unique three or four paragraph cover letter gives you the opportunity to highlight your transferable skills, as well as adding context around any gaps you might have in your resume. Linking your experience and background to the role makes a difference; trust us on this!

Whether you’re embracing AI, using video, or creating one from scratch, we reckon the cover letter is worth its weight in gold, our clients do too. If you want to stand out from the crowd, you have lots to gain by taking the time to share more of your humanness as part of your application.

What do you think; are you a fan of cover letters?
