Front-End Developer (remote working options available)

Listed 19 days ago

About us
Our aim at Dragonfly Data Science is to do good things with data.  The outcomes of our work have a long-lasting impact on New Zealand and the rest of the world. We work at the cutting edge of data science practice; specialising in statistical analysis and machine learning.  Our work is supported by solid software engineering, clear communication, and creative flair.  We’re engaged by our clients for a wide range of projects across different sectors, including marine science, bioinformatics, ecology and natural language processing. Our talented team is made up of data scientists, mathematicians, marine and fisheries scientists, geospatial analysts, software developers, machine learning engineers and digital designers.

The opportunity
We’re searching for a talented Front-End Developer to join our team.  If you appreciate good design, love complex problems and coming up with bespoke solutions, you’ll be in your element here. As part of our small team of developers and designers, you’ll build interactive tools that help our clients visualise, filter and refine large and complex data sets.   Our work has high impact and the solutions we build are high performing and beautifully designed.

Dragonfly’s work is never the same and it’s generally never standard. We’re trying to solve complex problems, as such, we’re building user interfaces that need to manage that complexity and are also not standard off the shelf solutions.  You’ll be guided through what we’re trying to deliver, working closely with our design lead to ensure high quality technical design and UX.  You’ll also work with the wider team including data scientists, machine learning experts, fishery scientists and cartographers, so the opportunities to learn are endless.

About you:
You have an open and curious mindset and enjoy solving problems. You’re happy to dive into domains that you’re unfamiliar with, are quick to understand what the business requirements are and what they mean for development work.  You have an eye for detail and know how to work with designers to achieve the results they’re after. You can tell what looks good, what doesn’t and when to stop as well!

You know your way around TypeScript based React apps and understand the complexities of software development in large scale TypeScript applications. Whilst we make liberal use of Tailwind to manage our CSS load, you know how to get your hands dirty and can roll your CSS by hand if needed.

You test your work to ensure your code has excellent test coverage. Your tests are repeatable, and you know how to navigate around difficult to test edge-cases. You have exposure with running tools run in the command line, are used to virtualisation and know how to set up your projects so anyone can use them.

We’re looking for someone with most of the following:
  • At least 2 years’ experience with JavaScript application frameworks
  • Understanding of the React ecosystem (or experience with similar frameworks such as Vue, Svelte, Angular or SolidJS)
  • Good understanding of responsive design practices
  • TypeScript & JavaScript
  • React with Next.js and/or Gatsby
  • Tailwind, CSS & CSS pre-processors such as PostCSS or Sass
  • Linux or Mac experience
  • Experience with tools like Git, Docker, Cypress and Jest would also be useful
  • Exposure to design tools such as Figma or Sketch would be advantageous.
Experience with AWS, automated build and deployment tools or languages such as Haskell, Elm or R would be advantageous, but none of these are essential as we can teach you.

What we offer
In joining us, you’ll be part of a smart and talented team who are as passionate about data and science as you are.  We have a supportive, inclusive and kind culture with a clear purpose behind everything we do.  Our values of openness, engagement, curiosity and independence seek to drive discussion, get useful information into the public domain, and change the world for the better.

We develop and promote our people just as much as the science they contribute to. We value and reward unique skills and strengths and place a priority on supporting our people to grow and develop their careers.

While most of our team are based in Wellington, we’re open to discussing flexible and remote options that suit your lifestyle and situation.   You’ll enjoy social team activities and events, 5 weeks annual leave and a competitive salary.

We’ll be reviewing applications as we go, so apply now with your CV and a cover letter letting us know why you'll be a terrific addition to our team.  We’ve partnered with Kin to fill this exciting role. For more information please contact Stacey Aubry on [email protected]
